Sawks and Lopez agree on one year deal

The Sawks have signed lefty specialist Javier Lopez to a one year contract worth 840 thousand.It is also worth noting Youk filed for arbitration. As well as Kyle Snyder.Lopez was 2-1 last year with a 3.10 era last year fo the Sawks. Here's the link.

Jon Lester is one of those guys you can't help but root for. After all he's went through and he just keeps coming back better and better. Aside from the cancer, he wasn't slated as a starter in the playoffs and ended up giving the Sawks some of thier most important innings. Mirabelli re-signs

The importance of this can not be understated. Mirabelli is a huge peice in the Sawks puzzle. Tim Wakefeild brings thoughts to mind of Will Smith with out his dog in I Am Legend. It just does'nt work when they aren't together. Another smart descion by the Sawks brass.And hopefully another step towards the World Series. R.I.P. Buddy Leroux

The former Sawks owner died on Monday. Leroux started off as team trainer for the Sawks from '66-'74, from there he moved up to vice president of the team in '78 and '79. After that he was owner of the of the team from '79-'86. He was also at one time a trainer for the Celtics as wellas the Barrie Flyers a minor league affiliate of the Bruins. He was 77.His funeral will be Saturday in Wolfeboro. He will be buried in Tuftonboro in the spring.

Jim Rice gets the shaft....Again

Once again former Boston Greay jim Rice has been denied entrance into the Hall of Fame. Coming up short by 15 or so votes this time. This is a travesty that a player with his credentials is not in the Hall let alone the fact he has been passed up so many times. Heres the link. If you ask me its MULARKEY. Tek extension a critical peice of Sawks puzzle

If you were to look at Jason Variteks numbers over the last two seasons nothing would really jump out at you. However this is truly a case of you can't judge a book by his cover. Although Tek's offense numbers have been down his importance to the team has not waned a bit. Aside from being clubhouse leader his on field performance goes far beyond offense. Tek is probably the best catcher at calling games in the game today. Look no further than the '06 season at how the team fell apart after he was injured and finished in a dismal third place in the East. Not to mention Paplebon blew his first save while Tek was injured. Those are just my thoughts though. Here is an article I came across in regards to his extension

Nothing new on Santana front

A lot of people, sports writers and fans included seem very worried that The Sawks will go into next season with no significant additions to the roster. Barring a trade which is not likely any time soon. The Sawks are gonna look like last years World Champions.I dunno why thats such a bad thing. Besides the Tigers there have not been any huge moves in the American League. So the question now is can The Sawks beat the Tigers, instead of the normal, can The Sawks beat the Yanks. Apparently the Santana deal is not dead yet and could still happen but now there are a few more teams in the running,Including The Sawks. I hope with everything in me that the Yankmees are unable to pull off this trade. I obviously would love to see the Sawks pick him up, but if not we are very strong in the pitching department. Sawks pick up two veteran pitchers

The Sawks signed veteran pitchers Jon Switzer and Michael Tejera to minor league contracts and invited them to spring training this season.
Switzer 28, has spent his major league career with Tampa garnering a career record of 2-4 and 6.11 ERA. Tejera has spent time with three major league teams compiling an 11-13 career record with a 5.14 ERA in 111 major league appearances. Hopefully they can pan out and be viable bullpen options this season for The Sawks.

The Sawks top a list of milestones and stories to watch for in 2008. The question here is will they be the first team since the 1999 and 2000 Yankmees teams to repeat as World Series champs. If you were to ask me, on top of the phenomenal pitching staff that may or may not include Johan Santana. We have the best bullpen in baseball and batting order that helped win a world series while half the team was having down hitting years. Its in the bag baby. (i'm not really that cocky actually i'm a little scared of Detroit at this point but i'll put on a brave face)

A Rod Re-signs

The word out of New York is that A Rod has signed a new 10 year 275 million dollar contract. What a complete idiot he would of got more money had he signed an extension before opting out. Apparently he just wanted a chance to finally make headline in October. I think he's one of those guys who enjoy punishment because no matter what, the first time he chokes in a big situation he'll be public enemy number 1 again in New York.
This basically brings the Yanks from a longshot wild card contender right back into the mix in the division. Had he left I think the Yanks would have had a hard time breaking .500 next year. Now we get another season or maybe ten of nail biters down the stretch. The only good part of this is it knocks the Yanks out of the Mike Lowell race.

A Six Man Rotation ?

Could THE SAWKS go with a six man rotation next season? Barring a trade for Johan Santana, it may not be so far fetched. Right now THE SAWKS have Josh Beckett, Curt Schilling, Dice K, Tim Wakefield, Jon Lester, and young phenom Clay Buckholz. I believe the reason know one employs the six man rotation is because no one has a pitching staff strong enough. Heck most teams have trouble finding viable 3 and 4 options let alone 6.
The pros of this are numerous. Here are a couple.
-Each pitcher would benefit from the extra days rest. Well, besides SChilling who's bonus goes by innings pitched. I guarantee his 42 year old body will benefit though.One reason for Dice K's struggles was adapting to shorter rest having worked with a six man rotation.
-With each pitcher having extra rest they are more likely to go to deeper into games putting less stress on the bullpen. Which would definetly benefit any team down the stretch.
I see no clear drawback here. If they do go to five who is the odd man out here.
obviously not Beckett nor Schilling or Dice K. So ...
-Wakefield - a knuckleballer needs to get in a groove and it would be hard to find a groove pitching only one inning. This also limits his effectiveness in the next days game. Seeing as how after seeing the knuckleball many Hall of Famers have said it takes a game or two to get into a hitting groove again.
-Lester - One of the great stories in baseball not only that but some in THE SAWKS orginization would have you believe he was a better prospect than Paplebon. How can you take that kind of potetial out of your rotation?
- Buckholz - Lets see.. something like four career big league starts one no hitter, one shutout and another game which would have been if not for an error. The guy is a superstar in waiting.
THE SAWKS could field the greatest 6 man rotation ever. They have my vote.

Beckett Robbed !!!

Josh Beckett was robbed earlier to day when C.C. Sabathia was awarded the 2007 American League CY Young. C.C. recieved 19 of 28 firsrt place votes while Beckett only recieved 8. I mean in all honesty Sabathia is a good pitcher, a very good pitcher. Buy most certainly not the best pitcher in the American League. Heck he isn't even the best pitcher on his team. That honor goes to Carmona.
Just another example of THE SAWKS getting the shaft in the award department. Going back to last year, Ortiz was hoodwinked out of the MVP. Mike Lowell has gotten the shaft two years in a row in the gold glove department and dont get me started on
Ped-Rock and Coco crisp not winning gold gloves this year. I just don't understand the voters bias against THE SAWKS. Maybe Steinbrenner is the only voter.

Pedroia Wins Rookie of the Year

Dustin Pedroia has picked up top honors for a rookie in the American League for 2007. After a slow start to 2007 Pedroia turned up the heat finishing with a .317 batting average. He was also ranked as one of the top 5 hardest to strike out players in the major leagues. Striking out only 42 times in 520 at bats. On top of all this he only committed 6 errors finishing with a .990 feilding percentage(yeah i think he got robbed for the gold glove).
Pedroia was drafted out of Arizona State University in 2004. In his three years there he never hit below .347. He made his major league debut on August 22, 2006 against the Angels wearing the number 64 till the begining of the 2007 season. After his rock star rookie season Pedroia said he would like to be referred to as Ped-Rock.
The last Red Sox player to win the R.O.Y. was Nomar Garciaparra in 1997.

Big Papi wins Silver Slugger

David Ortiz has won a forth consecutive Silver Slugger for the position of DH. Ortiz was tops in the majors with a .445 on base percentage. He also led the American League in walks 111 and extra base hits with 88. On top of that he also hit a career high .332 and 35 home runs.
All this came in what has to be considered a down year for The Big Papi. A year in which he had to take cortizone shots in the knee and shoulder and has already had offseason knee surgery.
Silver Sluggers are presented to the best hitter for each postion ad voted on by managers and coaches.

Youkilis wins Gold Glove

Kevin Youkilis was named 2007 Gold Glover at first base for the American League. With his exceptional play and record setting 190 regular season errorless games at first base.
I'm sure thier were many other worthy candidates but none as worthy as the mayor of Chinny Chin Chinville. Youk is the first Red Sox first basemen since George Scott in 1971 to bring home the hardware. And barring injuries or an unexpected return to third base he should be filling his mantle for years to come.
I myself find it hard to believe Youkilis was the only Gold Glover on THE SAWKS. Mike Lowell may very well be the best defensive third basemen in baseball, and if not for some early season tribulations it would have been a no brainer. Not to say that it wasn't anyway. He was also robbed last year after commiting only six errors all season long. This is starting to become a yearly occurence. Coco "web gem" Crisp also had the best fielding percentage of any everyday outfielder in baseball, but lets not cry over spilt milk.
For now we will just have to bask in the glory of Kevin Youkilis, and wait till next year when THE SAWKS go for the clean sweep in the American League.

Schilling Re-signs

Big game Curt signed a one year 8 million dollar contract with THE SAWKS that with all incentives could reach as much as 13 million. The incentives are based on innings pitched with the max bonus at 200 and an additional weight clause that Schilling himself added as a motivater.

With this signing THE SAWKS brass has once again shown they aren't afraid to let the money fly to improve the team.

Since acquiring Schilling from the D-backs in Nov. 2003 THE SAWKS have gone on to win two championships. Dispatching of the evil empire that is the Yankees in 2004 in the greatest comeback in baseball history. After which making light work of the Cards to win thier first title in 86 years. And then again in 2007 making easy work of quite possibly the hottest team in baseball history the Colorado Rockies who going into the series had won 22 of 23.

Which begs the question is Mr. Schilling the missing link to the puzzle that was the Curse of the Bambino?
